Crossing the Lundi, 1890-08-02
Scope and Contents
Showing wagons crossing the Lundi River with a good view of the corduroy road (built from branches and small tree trunks laid on a bedding of packed sand) leading into the foreground of the photograph. Photograph taken on August 2nd, when the crossing was made. ‘One of the most serious obstacles of the whole trek was the Lundi River, a deep, swiftly flowing stream of considerable width with an uneven, rocky bed which threatened to capsize the wagons. As far as was practicable the drift was corduroyed with tree trunks, but even then it took several hours for the convoy to cross to the opposite bank. All hands were enlisted to assist the oxen pull the wagons; ropes were tied to the trek chains and the troopers hauled them as though engaged in a tug-of war. The weather was cool and the sun obscured by cloud, and the men found the water cold when they stripped and plunged into the river to help a wagon wheel over a boulder or out of a hole ...’ W.D. Gale in ‘One Man’s Vision: The Story of Rhodesia’ (London, 1935), p. 52.
