Chibi (or Chiri) was the title of the paramount chiefs of the Mari (or Mhari), a branch of the Karanga cluster of Shona and known as the Banyai in the nineteenth century (see 'Historical Dictionary of Rhodesia/Zimbabwe', R. Kent Rasmussen, 1979). The Chibi in 1890 was Madhlangore (d. 1907). Chibi's Kraal, which the main body of the Pioneers reached in early August, was situated about 12 miles south south east of Providential Pass near the River Tokwi.
