Electric light at Macloutsie Camp, 1890
Scope and Contents
Showing the steam engine and mounted searchlight set up near a row of wagons at Macloutsie Camp. ‘An additional precaution which undoubtedly helped to ensure the safety of the Column was the use of a 10,000 candle-power searchlight which Johnson had the foresight to include in his equipment. Served by a dynamo which in turn was worked by a six horse-power engine destined for a saw-mill in Mashonaland, the searchlight was mounted on a pile of boxes on a wagon, and commanded an extensive radius all round the laager. The steam-engine which generated the power resembled a model of Stephenson's 'Rocket' with its tall funnel rising well above the level of the wagons. As soon as a halt was called steam was raised, and for two hours after nightfall the questing eye of the light roved over the bush...’ W.D. Gale 'One Man’s Vision', (London, 1935), p. 49.
