View, from the south, of the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, 1863-06-03
Scope and Contents
Watercolour by Christabel Airy, daughter of the Astronomer Royal, George Airy. The painting is signed and dated on the back.
In this view, the observatory buildings are shown from the south. To the far left, the roof of Flamsteed House is visible, as is the Greenwich Time Ball. Directly to the right of this is the Altazimuth Dome with its low wooden drum dome and to the right of this again is the Quadrant Room. Airy built the three-storey Altazimuth Dome in 1844. To the far right is the newly built South East Dome (finished in 1857). In 1859, the Great Equatorial Telescope was installed inside it [http://collections.rmg.co.uk/collections/objects/10181.html].
Further paintings of the South East Dome by Christabel Airy are at [RGO 116/5/5] and [RGO 116/5/7].
