View of the Royal Observatory, Greenwich from the lower part of the garden, 1858
Scope and Contents
Watercolour painting, thought to be the work of Christabel Airy, daughter of the Astronomer Royal, George Airy. On the back are samples of paints in different colours with their names indicated along with the date.
This painting shows the greater part of the range of observatory buildings, Greenwich. To the far left, the roof of Flamsteed House is just visible, as is the mast for the Time Ball. To the right of this is the three-storey Altazimuth Dome with its low wooden drum dome, built by Airy in 1844. To the right of this again is the Quadrant Room. To the far right is the newly built South East Dome, finished in 1857. In 1859, the Great Equatorial Telescope was installed inside it [http://collections.rmg.co.uk/collections/objects/10181.html]. In the foreground are the lawns and trees of the Lower Garden.
A similar view by Christabel Airy, dated 1863, can be seen at [RGO 116/5/8].
