Scope and Contents

From the Fonds:

An album recording the visit of Lord and Lady Hewart to South Africa. The album is inscribed 'To Lord and Lady Hewart: A Momento [sic] of a Trip to South Africa'. It was presumably the work and gift of a friend who travelled with them as it covers the entire journey from leaving Southampton to their return. The photographs are amateur work and are fully described in captions written in white ink, not always easily legible, on the black pages of the album. The captions have been recorded as found and may include language which is offensive, inaccurate or inappropriate. They have been retained to reflect the context of the collection's creation. The sizes vary from 60 x 90 mm to 210 x 165 mm.

Gordon Hewart, First Viscount Hewart (1870-1943) was Lord Chief Justice of England from 1922-1940. This was his first visit to South Africa and he went on the recommendation of his second wife, Jean (née Stewart), 'who already knows South Africa and loves it'. In the course of his stay he received the Honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from the University of the Witwatersrand and spoke and broadcast, but it was essentially a holiday visit.
