Scope and Contents

Papers for the meeting of the Astronomy Sub-Committee of the Research Grants Committee, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, at State House, London, on 10 March 1965. The documents include 'Resolution on Professor Hoyle's application' (loose) and minutes and matters arising from the nineteenth meeting of the sub-committee. The rest of the papers are comprised of applications from the University of Sussex and various individuals for Special Research Grants, as follows:

University of Sussex: application for funds for an Institute of Theoretical Astronomy.

Professor K. Smith, University of Sussex: application for the construction of a Michelson stellar interferometer.

Sir Bernard Lovell: application for the 'Investigation of galactic and extragalactic radio emissions'.

Professor J. Ring: application for work on 'Astronomical observations from a high altitude site'.

Dr J.A. Bastin and Professor G.O. Jones: application for work on the 'Improvement of telescope for solar, lunar and planetary observations'.

F. Hoyle: application for 'The establishment of an Institute for Advanced Studies in Theoretical Astronomy'.

Professor M. Ryle: application for the 'Development of new techniques and equipment for radio astronomy'.

Dr A. Hewish: application for research on 'Interplanetary Scintillation'.

R.V. Willstrop: application for 'Measurements of Stellar Radiation in c.g.s. Units'.

Madge Gertrude Adam: application for 'A photometric investigation of the Zeeman effect in the spectra of magnetic stars'.

Dr P.F. Scott: application for work on the 'Conversion of a large radio telescope to a frequency of 81.5 Mc/s'.

E.H. Linfoot: application for work on 'Coma tolerances in astronomical telescopes'.

R.O. Redman: application for work on the 'Microphotometry of spectrum of Arcturus'.

Professor D.E. Blackwell: application for work on the 'Measurement of oscillator strengths of iron lines'.
