Scope and Contents

Personal correspondence of H. Spencer Jones concerning meetings, lectures, accounts, visits and other subjects. The correspondents include E.N. da C. Andrade, A. Danjon, Sir Laurence Bragg, J. Jelstrup, Sir Harold Jeffreys, A. Kopff, W.H. Munk, F. Moreau, N.F. Mott, J.H. Oort, H. Quill, R.O. Redman, C.S. Beals, L. Spitzer, A. Mitchell, J.B. Macelwane, J.F. Heard, G.M. Clemence, C.M. Billings, Sir Archibald Day, W.H. Shortt, M.N. Saha, L. Essen, J.E. Sears, O. Struve, H. Wood, C. Walen, the American Philosophical Society, the Royal Society, the Royal Institute, the Science Museum, the British Astronomical Association, the Faculty of Astronomical Studies, the Astronomical Society of Edinburgh, the Franklin Institute, the Smithsonian Institute, the Royal Society of Arts, the Society of Visiting Scientists and the Institute of Nuclear Physics. There is also correspondence with 'Nature', 'Far and Wide', 'Research', 'Endeavour' and 'Victoria'. The letters include considerable material regarding the visit by the Astronomer Royal to America and the celebration of the reopening of the Pulkova Observatory.

The correspondence is accompanied by a range of additional items. These include papers by H. Spencer Jones on the 'Secular Increase in the length of the Day', 'The history of the marine chronometer', 'A tribute to Arthur Tremayne', 'The International Geophysical Year', 'The evolution of the Telescope', 'Continuous creation', 'The measurement of Time', 'The National Geographical Society Palomar Observatory Sky Atlas' and 'British contribution to the International Geophysical Year'. There are book reviews, comments, tributes and other items relating to K.F. Gauss, Sir Charles Parsons, Sir Arthur Eddington, Sir James Jeans and others. There are also two ledger books for the York Minster Thanksgiving Memorial Astronomical Clock containing balances; general accounts, June 1954-December 1955; and salary and wages accounts, April 1954-November 1955.
