Letters to Joseph Fowler, 1940 - 1951
Scope and Contents
Letters sent by Helen Cam to the Rev Joseph Fowler [1872-1958, antiquarian, editor of Somerset & Dorset Notes & Queries]. The letters are dated 1940, 1944, 1947 and 1948 and are addressed variously from Girton College and from Oxford. They offer JF suggestions for reading, advice and comment in connection with his research on hundreds, manors, tithes, assizes, frankpledge etc and she offers the loan of books. The letter of 21 August 1947 mentions HMC’s work on her ‘EHR article’ [an article she wrote on Olof Sigfrid Anderson’s ‘English Hundred Names’]. The letters contain occasional, short personal greetings and remarks, such as comment on the war and looking forward to retirement. As the donor comments, the letters ‘illustrate the precision of her scholarship and her generosity in answering enquiries’: she asks him to keep her in touch with his work and the letters often end with remarks such as ‘If I get any further light I will write’. The file also contains a postcard of Harvard Memorial Church sent by HMC to JF with new year greetings in 1951.
