Transcripts of letters written during the Franco-Prussian War and the Siege of Paris, 1870-08-29 - 1871-03-24
Scope and Contents
Forty-three transcripts of letters written by Adelaide de Montgolfier to Louise Swanton Belloc while the latter was in exile in England. The letters describe the progress of the war and the deprivations caused by the Siege of Paris, also the state of affairs at the house at La Celle St Cloud, attempts to put things there into safekeeping etc. The first letters in the series predate the departure of Bessie and Louis Belloc for England with their children Marie and Hilaire. People mentioned regularly include Bessie and Louis; Catherine and Raphael (with whom Adelaide de Montgolfier lived during this period); Lily Ballot [née Belloc, formerly Millet], who also remained in France during this period because her son René was fighting; and Jacques [Redelsperger?].
The file contains transcripts of most but not all of the original letters at GCPP Parkes 17a/1/2/17. It also contains transcripts of some letters whose originals appear not to have survived. The transcripts are incomplete in parts and may be occasionally inaccurate. There appear to be no surviving letters in original or transcript for December 1870.
