Miscellaneous letters written by Louise Swanton Belloc, some but not all to family, 1842 - 1880
Scope and Contents
Some letters are undated. Not all recipients are discernible. File contains the following:
1. ’Monsieur, J’ai ressenti une grande joie - - - [? concerns a posthumous award to Jean Hilaire Belloc, husband of L S B]. Draft only, incomplete, no date [1860s?];
2. Letter to ‘Chère fille' [L S B to ? her daughter Louise Redelsperger], 13 November 1870;
3. Letter from L S B to Adelaide de Montgolfier, addressed to Passage du Commerce 19, begins ‘Comment vas-tu ce matin, chère amie - - - ‘, no date;
4. Letter from L S B to ? Adelaide de Montgolfier (no date, but she refers to A de M’s mother, so possibly as early as 1820s?), begins ‘J’ai à peine le temps de respirer, Chère amie - - - ‘;
5. Letter from L S B to ? her son Louis, in which she asks him to get her a copy of a book containing an article on Marguerite Fuller, no date;
6. Letter from L S B to ‘chère fille’ [her daughter Louise?] in which she refers to Mdme de Canson, 6 April ?1842;
7. Letter from L S B from La Celle St Cloud [? to Bessie Belloc] - she says 'je serai contente d’embrasser mes chers petits enfants et vous chère fille’, 6 June 1878;
8. Letter from L S B [? to Bessie Belloc], in English - she says ‘Louise - - - speaks wildly of going over with a pass of the British Embassy, if her son is wounded - - - ‘. 2 December [no year, but she mentions ‘Baby’ and ‘Louis’, thus probably 1870 or 1871];
9. Letter from L S B addressed to ‘Mon cher enfant’ in which she mentions Maria Edgeworth and Dickens, circa 1870? A note in pencil is attached which reads ‘About conscription. Not to Hilaire. Possibly to Ballot junior’;
10. Letter from L S B addressed to ‘Chère fille’ [Lily Ballot?], 19 November 1870;
11. Letter dated 30 November [1870/71?], possibly to Bessie Belloc?;
12. Letter from L S B, from Paris 16 September, no year, to Bessie Belloc in which she says she has been ill for six days;
13. Part of a letter from L S B, edged in black, to Bessie Belloc?, with another part addressed to ‘Mon cher fils’, 1 January 1868;
14. Letter from L S B , from La Celle, 23 June 1871, to ‘Chère amie' [Adelaide de Montgolfier?], in which she says ‘Vous ne pouvez venir droit ici - - - , there is not a room to be had for rent, a sad state of affairs after the war;
15. Note written by L S B in English, no date [1880s?], in which she talks of ‘the age of our dear friend Adelaide as 91 years’ and says ‘If any important changes have occurred in your family I should like to be informed - - - ‘;
16. Letter from L S B, from La Celle, where Bessie is with her, 27 July 1877, addressed to ‘Chère Madame’, whom she thanks for her sympathy on the loss of her sister-in-law [a sister of Jean Hilaire Belloc].
