The Military and Civil Journal: Volume 2, 1903 - 1904
Scope and Contents
A handwritten and illustrated magazine 'edited by Lieut. Mandeville' [E M W Tillyard]: it appears to have been begun by Eustace Tillyard while serving with the Cambs. Rifle Volunteers 3rd Suffolk V. B. in the Boer War - 'This magazine is for all the members of the family and especially for such families which have been divided by the present war. The notes on the war by our military expert will be read with much interest by the relations of our gallant soldiers and the other contents will amuse them and keep them from being over anxious. The illustrations are by the most eminent artists of the day'. 'Notes on the War' cease at the end of the Boer War and the Journal continues with chiefly poems, serialised stories, cartoons, colour fashion drawings etc. Many items are contributed by Aelfrida Tillyard. Occasional articles also appear to be about or contributed by Constantine Graham c. 1905-06. Some items are written in French, German or Latin and many are satirical or nonsensical in nature.
