Letters to Miss Robertson [Agnes Arber née Robertson]: Letterfile 4. Letters 197-243, 1906-03-18 - 1908-09-22
Scope and Contents
Most are written from Quarry Hill, Reigate. The first letter is concerned with A R’s paper in the ‘NQ’, and is followed by one discussing the nature of research and ‘mechanical work’. News of a paper on grasses (8 May 1906) is followed by comments on the new Director of Kew (10 June 1906). Thereafter letters are concerned with a mix of botanical subjects, holidays, health and family. In June 1907, E S proposes using first names to address each other; in October she is working on reducing her lecture series for an article in the ‘Annals’ [of Botany]. Letter 236 is out of chronological sequence being 7 June 1907 rather than 1908, and is a response to the announcement of A R’s engagement to E A N Arber. In September 1908 there is a discussion of women’s suffrage (including A R’s sister’s involvement) and A R’s culinary confidence. The sequence ends with an offer of life fellowship of the Linnean Society as a wedding present.
