Scope and Contents

2 page letter, together with envelope addressed to Madame Belloc, Slindon, near Arundel, Sussex. Margaret thanks Bessie for her letter, ‘teeming’ with memories. She went to Hastings in October and looked at the two houses in Pelham Crescent and thought of Bessie and Barbara and others. She looked for the Beach Cottage but it was no longer there. She is still grieved about the death of Bessie’s daughter-in-law [Elodie, née Hogan, wife of Hilaire Belloc]. She follows the literary career of Bessie’s daughter, Marie Belloc Lowndes, with interest. She was staying in Perros-Guirec, Brittany, with her friend Julia Franckenstein when war broke out. Julia was able to get back to Innsbruck via Geneva: Margaret remained in Brittany but her possessions were confiscated in Austria. She was given much help by Nannie Leigh Smith, of whom she talks at length and with whom she stayed for 7 months. She then moved to Launceston with a Catholic friend, feeling the need to be nearer a Catholic church, though NLS’s generosity to her continues in Cornwall. She discusses the war service of John Macmillan, husband of her Australian-born niece, Maude Howitt. He was injured at Gallipoli and taken to hospital in London where Margaret visited him, staying with her Macdonell cousins.
