Margaret Howitt was born in Surrey in 1839, the daughter of William Howitt and Mary, née Botham. She was the younger sister of Anna Mary Watts, née Howitt. The family moved to Heidelberg in 1840, returning to England in 1843. While her father and brothers travelled to Australia from 1852 to 1854, Margaret lived in London with her mother and sister. She lived in Austria during the late 19thC and early 20thC with an invalid friend, Julia Franckenstein, but they were forced by the onset of World War I to go separate ways. She stayed for seven months with her close friend, Nannie Leigh Smith, before moving to Launceston, Cornwall. Margaret Howitt edited the autobiography of her mother, Mary Howitt, after Mary’s death and published it in 1889. Margaret died in 1930.
