Letter from Bessie Parkes to Barbara Leigh Smith Bodichon, addressed from 11 Great College Street, 1871-02-12
Scope and Contents
Bessie has had a letter from Paris describing the living conditions there [during the Franco-Prussian War]. ‘Mademoiselle’ [Adelaide de Montgolfier?] is in a state of ‘guerre à l’outrance’. Bessie mentions seeing a royal procession and says the Queen looked ‘like a piece of wood’. She has heard that the Prussians have bought up ordnance maps of the south of England and imagines various scenarios including a Prussian regiment billeted on Robertsbridge. She has a report on trade unions to review for the Spectator.
