Letter from [Bessie Parkes] to Barbara Bodichon, addressed from 'Chair by the Fire, Bedroom', 1864-03-16
Scope and Contents
Bessie continues to recover from scarlet fever and is making plans to meet Barbara at Marseilles and go on to Rome with her. She is glad that her illness has distanced her from many of her previous activities. She comments on E[mily] Davies and University Examinations. She would like two years of hearing no more about schools, workhouses, nursing, temperance, social science etc. She is angry about a Professor Ernst in Sweden who has commented on her even though she has never met him. The Procters have all been particularly good to her in her illness and convalescence. She has received the ‘maddest’ letter from Jane Crowe. She is sorry about Barbara’s pictures but can do nothing for her. She dare not look at them or write to anyone about them for fear of passing on scarlet fever. She still feels it would be better for Barbara to wait till June. She thinks of Adelaide [Procter] and prays for her. Two pages.
