Letter from Bessie Parkes to Barbara Bodichon, addressed from 17 Wimpole Street, 1863-11-18
Scope and Contents
Bessie is making enquiries on Barbara’s behalf about various picture galleries but feels Barbara needs to make some personal effort in this respect. Frank Evers would like to buy one of Barbara’s drawings. Some money has come in for Maria Rye’s expenses. Bessie has been to the theatre with Belle. She discusses the possibility of going to Hastings: Miss Ludlow is going immediately. She has not seen Marian [George Eliot] recently and it is more difficult for her to do so now that Marian lives further away. She speaks critically [of Marian’s relationship with G H Lewes] and feels that few people can ‘see her excuses for what she has done’. Isa [Craig] would like to meet Marian. Bessie feels that Unitarian influence on the world is good in terms of public works but not in terms of Christianity. She comments on the writing of Renan and Colenso. She says if she clings to the Catholic Church it is because Jesus seems to her to be there. [Letter incomplete.] Two pages.
