Letter from Bessie Parkes to Barbara Bodichon, addressed from Dublin, 1863-08-28
Scope and Contents
Bessie discusses the work of Maria [Rye] for the emigration movement and comments on letters written by M R to The Times on the subject. She feels that neither she nor Barbara can take any real daily oversight of this work. Bessie is prepared to undertake private fundraising for M R’s work and feels that this is more respectable than attempting to fundraise through the press. She says she will not ‘read at the SS this year’ [ie read a paper for the National Association for the Promotion of Social Science] and discusses the work of Katie W[ebber?] and Jane Lewin in this area. [Transcript only: original letter not extant.] Two pages.
