Letter from Bessie Parkes to [Barbara Bodichon], 1863
Scope and Contents
Bessie says that she borrowed money when she was winding up the employment of Max [Hays] on the English Woman’s Journal. She is pleased that Barbara continues to provide for the emigration work [of Maria Rye] but is disappointed that Maria is reported as being beaten by resistance to her plans. She believes that the work [of the English Woman’s Journal] is difficult because of the lack of a common religious ground between the participants. She can deal with Unitarians and Catholics but finds it difficult to deal with those of Church of England background, including Emily Davies, Jane Crowe and E[mily] F[aithfull]. [Letter incomplete.] Two pages, together with one page transcript of most of the letter.
