Letter from Bessie Parkes to Barbara Bodichon, addressed from 'Willingham (Jessie Boucherett's)' [Lincolnshire], 1862-12-18
Scope and Contents
Bessie apologises for not writing sooner but she has a huge amount of correspondence to deal with even though she has given up the [English Woman’s] Journal and the [Emigration] Committee. She discusses Barbara’s estrangement from Aunt Julia and the possibility of inviting a Mrs Webber to Algiers. After Barbara left London Bessie spent a fortnight in Liverpool then a fortnight in Dublin. All is well at Langham Place [English Woman’s Journal]. Max [Hays] has gone to Malvern. Adelaide [Procter] is at home recovering from illness. Bessie’s parents are both well. Mary M[erryweather] is well but overworked, murder and suicide cases being common at the [Liverpool] Infirmary. Bessie is staying at a large country house with plenty to eat and drink and a degree of cultivation. She is well, provided she doesn’t do much or see many people. Two pages.
