Letter from [Bessie Parkes] to Barbara Bodichon, addressed from 17 Wimpole Street, 1862-01-12
Scope and Contents
Bessie discusses the work of Maria [Rye, 1829-1903, founder in 1861 of the Female Middle Class Emigration Society]. She thanks Barbara for her promised sketch of Brittany. She mentions Mary [Merryweather]’s ongoing work at Liverpool Infirmary and that she will be undertaking 3 months training at St Thomas’. Max [Hays] is looking for something to establish herself in but Bessie is keen to keep her away from the English Woman’s Journal. She discusses a letter from E B [Elizabeth Blackwell]. She has not seen Marian [Evans - George Eliot] since Barbara left and it appears that she is not keen to. She is weary on many levels. She talks at length once again on faith, religion and doctrine. She feels she and Barbara are at cross-purposes on the subject of ‘Catholicity’. Two page letter [letter incomplete], together with 2 envelopes inscribed with Lady Iddesleigh’s comments.
