Letter from Bessie Parkes to Barbara Bodichon, addressed from 17 Wimpole Street, 1861-12-08
Scope and Contents
Bessie is well and no longer experiencing the periods of exhaustion she used to suffer. She discusses friction in the office of the English Woman’s Journal and the impending departure of Max [Hays]. She discusses various proposed articles for the EWJ, including one from Miss [Frances Power] Cobbe. She discusses Roman Catholicism again. She comments on Herbert Spencer [1820-1903, sociologist, philosopher etc, who coined the phrase ‘survival of the fittest’ - - -] and on the books of Marian Evans [George Eliot]. Bessie says she cannot visit Barbara this spring as she is too busy with the EWJ: she gives further news of ongoing EWJ work. She comments again on Barbara’s reading of Montalembert [Charles Forbes René de Montalembert, 1810-1870] in relation to her (Bessie’s) state of mind on religious matters. She asks Barbara to persuade Gertrude Martineau to ‘believe we are not free-lovers or atheists’. She mentions that Mary M[erryweather] is at King’s College Hospital. Two pages.
