Letter from [Bessie Parkes] to [Barbara Bodichon], 1861-08
Scope and Contents
Bessie reflects at length on her spiritual and religious beliefs at the age of 32, in particular her leanings towards Roman Catholicism and various RC friends, including Mrs Woodcock and Mrs [Sarah] Atkinson. She wishes that Barbara would not try to sway her in any way. She is sorry that Barbara read Montalembert [Charles Forbes René de Montalembert, 1810-1870], which she considers too romantic to appeal to those not used to the Catholic point of view. She recommends Auguste Nicholas’ Etudes Philosophiques and is interested in the life of Bishop James Doyle. She also discusses the ‘Unity of Italy’ cause. [Letter incomplete.] Two pages.
