Letter from Bessie Parkes to [Barbara Bodichon], addressed from 17 Wimpole Street, 1860-01-08
Scope and Contents
Bessie is trying to persuade E[lizabeth Blackwell] to settle in London and will raise funds for her work if she does. Meantime she hopes to see Mary M[erryweather] set up in London as ‘Missionary to the E[nglish] W[oman’s] J[ournal].’ The E W J is largely managed by Max [Hays]: Bessie now rarely goes to the office except from 3 till 5. Circulation is still increasing. The journal may be self supporting in a year’s time. The Saturday Review has written a ‘beastly attack’ on the ‘Ladies’ Club’ [Langham Place]. Bessie remains in touch with Sam [Blackwell] but does not ‘urge’ him in any way and doubts he will ever pay his debts. She mentions letters from Ellen Cantelo, who does not seem happy. The Society for Employment [Society for the Promotion of the Employment of Women] is affiliated to NAPSS: Bessie hopes it will set up classes at once. Two pages.
