Letter from Bessie Parkes to [Barbara Bodichon], addressed from Manchester, 1859-10-19
Scope and Contents
Bessie has had a successful week at Leeds and Bradford [at the NAPSS meeting]. She read a paper to an audience of at least 200; she describes the part played by others, including [Louisa] Twining and a speech given by Lord Shaftesbury. She writes again of Sam Blackwell and Miss Shaw and the continued feeling that she could neither marry him nor leave her work or her increasingly cultivated life, marriage or no marriage. She is dining with Mrs Gaskell the next day and doing much work for the English Woman’s Journal. Two page letter together with one page partial transcript.
