Letter from Bessie Parkes to [Barbara Bodichon], addressed from The Royal Hotel, Deal, 1859-09-13
Scope and Contents
Bessie gives Barbara an address for G J Holyoakes, publisher (147 Fleet Street). She has sent Barbara a ‘Bradford prospectus’ [for the NAPSS (National Association for the Promotion of Social Science) meeting at Bradford, at which women were invited to speak] and wishes Barbara were attending: she feels that the Association will be influential. She has allowed her name to be on ‘Miss [Jessie] Boucherett’s Committee’ [for setting up the Society for the Employment of Women]. She is in correspondence with E[lizabeth] B[lackwell] and hopes to have some influence in her plans: she feels there has been financial mismanagement of E B’s women’s hospital plan. She informs Barbara of ongoing progress of the English Woman’s Journal. She is not feeling well off as she will not get money regularly until ‘after Xmas, when the estate is sold up’. Together with partial transcript. Three pages.
