Bessie talks of the progress or otherwise of the cause of women’s rights: she mentions Lord Shaftesbury as ‘chairman of the new Society’. She is doing her best to raise financial backing for the work of E[lizabeth] B[lackwell]. She has heard nothing from Anna about Sam [Blackwell] but hopes to see him over the winter. She mentions the Portfolio [Club].
