Letter from Bessie Parkes to [Barbara Leigh Smith], addressed from Carisbrooke [Isle of Wight], 1855-08-31
Scope and Contents
Bessie’s parents are away until the end of September and she would like to spend some time with Barbara. She likes Carisbrooke very much and still has much of the Isle of Wight to see. She feels that Barbara is now happier with her relationship with J[ohn] C[hapman]. She is drawing a lot and ideas for writing are accumulating. The absence of Miss [Max / Matilda] Hays is leaving her a pause to think freely over the last few months. She is hopeful about F[lorence] N[ightingale] and has written to The Leader about her; also mentions Ellen Cantelo, a ‘woman’s rights woman’. She has written to M[ax Hays] about George Sand to say she is ‘not fit to do it’ [ie write about George Sand?]. She is sorry that Barbara ‘can’t do Aspasia’. Two pages.
