Letter from Bessie Parkes to Barbara Leigh Smith, addressed from Yoxall Lodge, Staffordshire, 1849-08-24
Scope and Contents
Bessie describes Yoxall Lodge and its parkland and its residents. She says that, for all she enjoys the beauty of the place, she would not care to ‘lead the life of an ‘English gentlewoman’ of this class’. It oppresses her to think that the house and grounds belong only to one family. She will be in Ripon on Tuesday. She has favourable reports of her brother Priestley in Hastings. She is reading Carlyle’s essays. One page, together with one page transcript.
