Letter from Bessie Parkes to Barbara Leigh Smith, addressed from Hastings, 1849-08-03
Scope and Contents
Bessie asks Barbara’s opinion in the case of an engagement broken by a man on hearing of the ‘Father’s condemnation’ of the daughter he was to marry (Bessie feeling that the promise already made was binding). She also asks Barbara what she should do with the character of John Ashton in her novel. She finds it difficult to express any thoughts or feelings in the novel as it feels as though she were exposing her own feelings.
