Letter from Bessie Parkes to Barbara Leigh Smith, 1848-04-30
Scope and Contents
Bessie is reading Keats’ Endymion. She discusses the nature of personal perception of the commonplace as opposed to the poetical, with particular reference to a friend of hers, Emma Evers, and Barbara’s friend, Miss Howitt. She gives her impressions of the beauty of the Warwickshire countryside, especially at night, compared to Barbara’s love of the sea, and their mutual understanding of ‘real out of doors prayer’. She talks of the ‘hollowness of social life’ in Brighton and would rather be in the country. Two pages, together with one page transcript of the latter part of the letter.
