Letter from Bessie Parkes to Barbara Leigh Smith, 1848-04-29
Scope and Contents
Bessie has lent her copy of Tennyson [The Princess] to two other people already. She is reading Goethe’s autobiography and Shelley’s The Revolt of Islam. She has bought Tennyson’s portrait. Two of her poems have appeared in the Birmingham Journals of the 8th and 22nd. She is still taking Latin lessons. She asks Barbara to tell her what Miss Howitt is doing as she feels as interested in her as if she knew her. She longs to get away from town [Brighton] and see the country again although she occasionally rides far enough to get a glimpse. Her brother Priestley is well.
