Letter from Bessie Parkes to Barbara Leigh Smith, 1847-12-16
Scope and Contents
Bessie is going to the country shortly. She is likely to go to Hastings in February for a month or so as Mr Hodgson thinks it the best place for her brother Priestley. She intends to study ‘our Old Poets’ through the winter but is reading Greek tragedy in translation first. She continues with Latin. She discusses the use of the Bible for teaching in school and feels it is absurd to give children nothing else. Together with one page transcript of a small portion of the latter part of the letter.
