Letters from René Millet to Bessie Belloc (née Parkes) and Marie Belloc, 1879 - 1919
Scope and Contents
Six letters, in French, five of which are addressed to ‘Chère tante’ [Bessie Belloc, his ‘tante anglaise’] from René Millet, and a sixth to his cousin Marie Belloc. 1879-1895.
1. St Nazaire 4 January 1879: R M announces his intention of marrying;
2. St Nazaire (Sous-Préfecture) 30 March 1879 from R M and his wife Louise Millet - they invite Bessie to stay with them;
3. Versailles 27 April 1880: R M mentions his cousins Hilaire and Marie Belloc, complimenting the former on his writing - ‘son petit mot m’a fait grand plaisir’ and talks of his baby son Philippe;
4. Paris (Ministère des Affaires Etrangères) 4 January 1881: R M sends good wishes for the new year etc;
5. Avenay 19 September 1887: R M’s cousin Hilaire Belloc has been staying with RM - RM makes lengthy comment on H B’s inclinations and his character, and whether he is likely to become English or remain French, and says he will help in any way he can in his education etc, offer ‘tout service masculin, paternel’ that he can. R M describes him as having a ‘jeunesse un peu âpre, mais ardente et généreuse’;
6. Paris 4 December 1895 to ‘Ma chérie’ [Marie Belloc]: R M lists and discusses the most important works of Barthélemy St Hilaire; he signs off ‘Embrasse ta chère mère pour moi, et serre la main d’Hilaire. Ton vieux parrain [godfather] qui t’aime, René Millet’.
The file also contains a printed notice in French of the death of Monsieur René Millet, Ambassadeur de France, 1919.
