Scope and Contents

The letters are addressed variously to 'Chère Bessie', 'Chère Amie', Chère fille', and 'my beloved'. Some of the letters may be to L S B's friend, Adelaide de Montgolfier and at least one is to L S B's son [Bessie's husband], Louis Belloc. 25 letters. Some are addressed from Richmond, where L S B spent part of the Franco-Prussian War in exile.

A note on the original file cover says 'see p.126 of Marie Belloc Lowndes, 'I too have lived in Arcadia' - 'Jacques Redelsperger [son-in-law of L S B] had from the first foreseen the defeat of France - - - Louise [Redelsperger - L S B's older daughter], her fourteen year old daughter Juliette, and Mme Belloc [L S B] arrived together in the Isle of Wight. But within a short time Louise [Swanton Belloc] had taken a - - - house on Richmond Green'.
