The Rachel Chronicles: A Kind of Memoir: File 3
Scope and Contents
Being a Woman Graduate in Cambridge in the 1950s. Describes the applications process and her interviews at Girton College, arriving at Girton in 1952. Describes life at Girton and in Cambridge generally, her social life 'nurtured by the Jewish Society'. Rosemary Murray was her tutor. She lived at the Women Graduates' Club during what she calls her second 'semester'. She spent six months abroad studying under Professor Emil Staiger in Zurich. In her last year at Girton she rented a room from Dr Janet Vaughan. She felt that the policy towards research students was ‘Throw them in and let them sink or swim’. She wasn’t particularly happy in Cambridge, her priorities being ‘keeping warm, keeping fed, and keeping homesickness at bay’. But she goes on to describe her dissertation work and its difficulties in some detail, finally settling on the subject of the Kuenstlerroman in the early 20thC. She finishes with a description of her PhD graduation in 1957. [This is available as a PDF document - see details page.]
