Scope and Contents

Originally numbered 'Vol IX'. This volume is inscribed ‘Margaret S Willis, 8 Cavendish Avenue and Malvern Girls’ College’ [the latter is crossed out]. It is paginated 1-39 only. In this volume M W describes school work and activities, including geographical excursions, at Malvern Girls’ College (where she taught from 1925 to 1926) and her return visits to Cambridge during the school holidays. A large part of the volume consists of a description and illustrations of a family holiday in Spain in April 1926. In October 1926 M W began work as an assistant lecturer in geography at Manchester University: illustrations of excursions taken from there include postcards of Moreton Old Hall, Cheshire and pen and ink drawings of panoramas across parts of Cheshire. The entry for 2 January 1927 describes a long walk around the Fulbourn area of Cambridgeshire, including hand-drawn maps. A further family holiday in Spain is described in April 1927 [this is continued in the next volume].
Items pasted in and other illustrations also include the following: facing the entry for 12 June 1926, Girton College hockey team photograph with key to names [1924? - M W is 2nd from left back row?]; facing the entry for 29 June 1926, cutting concerning the inauguration of the Scott Polar Research Institute; facing the entry for July 5-24, cutting relating to appointments at Manchester University, including M W; facing the entry for 27 July 1926, ticket for Oxford conference of the British Association for the Advancement of Science, August 1926; facing the entry for 17 September 1926, photographs of ‘Mummy [Minnie Baldwin], Daddy [John Willis], Patsy [niece] and Anita’ [sister].
