General
Mary Lowndes, 1864-1947, was a close personal friend of ES; she came up to Girton College in 1884, the year after ES left; a historian, she studied with ES in Munich in the early 1890s and moved to the USA to teach at a girls' school in Connecticut where she was headmistress 1909-38.
