BRP miscellaneous fragments, 1856 - 1874
Scope and Contents
Fragments and drafts of letters, all presumed to be have been written by BRP, with the exception of no. 3) below, some undated. Ms, all with typescript transcripts attached. Parts of some of the letters have been crossed out: where this is the case, these parts have not been transcribed. 10 items, as follows:
1) 1856, no address, appears to be part of a letter from BRP to her father [Joseph Parkes] about a Mr Blackwell;
2) 19 May [1862], from 17 Wimpole Street [London], to 'Darling Polly' [probably George Eliot], referring to Robert Browning and to the death of Mrs [Elizabeth Barrett] Browning;
3) 2 letters, dated 2 and 5 February 1864, from 17 Wimpole Street, to 'Darling Mary' from 'My Mary's own wee Benjamin', concerning the death and funeral of Adelaide [Procter], finishing 'I am so thankful Bessie is with thee at last';
4) 24 December 1869, Paris, to 'My dearest Grandmama' from Mary Adelaide Elizabeth Julie Renee Belloc [Marie Belloc, daughter of BRP, aged about one; presumably written by BRP on MB's behalf];
5) 5 March 1872, from 17 Wimpole Street, refers to Louis [BRP's husband];
6) 22 July 1874, from Deal, describing Deal and other parts of Kent, alludes to 'When I was a child, at Leam - - ');
7) no date, addressed to 'My darling', refers to 'my new nephew' [Marcel] and his marriage to Juliette;
8) no date [1870s?], talks of French and Belgian thought and politics and refers to Mary M [Merryweather?];
9) fragment only, no date, describes a moonlight walk and refers to 'my dear, dear husband'.
