Early Poems, 1840 - 1883
Scope and Contents
Manuscript miscellaneous verse, annotated and paginated, originally in paper wrapper labelled 'Early Poems'. There are two distinct parts. The first has been re-sewn and re-numbered, (originally pp.25-30, and I-III), and the cover is titled ‘Tale of Provence Fragments Early Poems etc.' These 10 sheets appear to be the ‘Early Poems’. The earliest is dated ‘7th Decr. 1840 Brighton 57 Marine Parade’. The watermarks on these sheets are ‘C Wilmot 1837’ and ‘J Whatman Turkey Mill 1845’.
The remaining sheets form the bulk of this collection, which is also incomplete (pp.200-531 only). The poems often have a place and date of composition appended.
The last one is dated May, 1883. There is no watermark for pp. 200-221; for the rest the watermark is ‘C Ansell 1876’. These 332 pages have been sewn into 15 parts. There are pencil markings which seem to indicate that some poems have been copied. Some are present in the author’s publication, 'Lyre and Star'.
