Transliterated excerpts from Judaeo-Spanish texts, 1960 - 1965
Scope and Contents
This project was undertaken by Dr Crews in the 1960s when she was already quite ill. It is not clear exactly when it was begun, but it is probable that research was under way before she received a Leverhulme grant in 1961 to assist her work on the project. The project is clearly defined: the preparation of a volume of excerpts from Judaeo-Spanish texts, beginning as soon after 1492 as possible, with a glossary and linguistic notes. Most of the texts are religious: the gradual decline amongst the Sephardim in the use and knowledge of Hebrew had made necessary the use of another linguistic medium to keep alive the religious practices of Judaism. The proposed volume, designed for the use of Romance scholars, was never completed: there are omissions in the transliterations and no glossary or linguistic notes (but see GCPP Crews 5/16 File 1 for miscellaneous notes on points in some of these texts). [NB: there are microfilms of some of the texts at GCPP Crews 8.]
