Material in Judaeo-Spanish, 1901 - 1965
Scope and Contents
This section includes examples of Judaeo-Spanish collected orally (GCPP Crews 5/1) and from the Judaeo-Spanish press of Salonica, Sarajevo, Tel-Aviv and New York (GCPP Crews 5/3-9).
The stories related to Dr Crews by Meru Levy in Salonica in 1935 are of considerable importance: they represent living material which has become very difficult to find.
The transliterations of extracts from the Judaeo-Spanish press have little in the way of linguistic commentary or glossary. However, they are still of great importance as few records of this type survive: World War II saw the destruction of much material from the Judaeo-Spanish press. Aksiion Prensa, produced in Salonica, was printed in Hebrew characters, whereas Jevrejski Zivot and Jevreski Glas from the Sarajevo press had two sections, one in Hebrew characters and one in Roman characters. The pieces selected are a mixture of stories and ballads.
The section also contains Transliterated Excerpts from Judaeo-Spanish Texts, undertaken by Dr Crews in the 1960s (see GCPP Crews 5/10), and specimens of Judaeo-Spanish in the form of correspondence, including censorship material (see GCPP Crews 5/14-15).
