'The Girton girls put on a fashion show', 1957
Scope and Contents
Newspaper article from the Evening Standard Reporter about a fashion show put on by female undergraduates at Cambridge University's Women's Union 'to model the sort of outfits worn by typical blue-stockings in 1957'. Six Girton students participated, several of whom are named and shown in three accompanying photographs:
(1) A photograph at the top of the page shows Joanna Cotton to the right-hand side, wearing a ski-ing outfit, resting her foot on the arm of a chair while tying up her ski-boot. In the centre and left-hand side of the photograph, there are two rows of male undergraduates laughing and watching the fashion show. The printed caption reads: 'Joanna Cotton, third year history student, models a ski-ing outfit'.
(2) A photograph in the centre of the page shows Mary Morison [later Mrs Spyromilio, Girton 1956], seated on the ground in a party dress, at a slight angle, looking up at Isabella Szczerbinska [Girton 1956], who is kneeling over her and holding folds of Mary's dress. The caption reads: 'Law student Mary Morison models an ankle-length creation in pink satin and tulle. Isabella Szczerbinska is acting as her "dresser"'.
(3) A photograph at the bottom of the page shows Judith Innes [later Mrs Astor, Girton 1956], standing and facing the camera, holding open a dressing-gown to display her pyjamas, with the face of a seated male undergraduate visible in the left-hand of the photograph. The printed caption reads: 'A pyjama fashion shown by history student Judy Innes'.
