'Those wild, wild girls', 1957-04-01
Scope and Contents
Newspaper article from The Picture Post, written by Trevor Philpott, on the activities and occupations of young women in the 1950s. Girton College is mentioned in a section on 'University girls'. The article includes photographs taken by Bert Hardy:
(1) A photograph on the front of page 1 shows female students in academic gowns seated in Girton College Dining Hall, interspersed with waitresses, with high table and the portrait of Elizabeth Welsh in the background. The photograph is annotated in pencil with the names Christine Hamilton Moore [later Mrs Steele, Girton 1954], Liz Ringer [Elizabeth Ringer, later Mrs Newton, Girton 1955], and Joanna Cotton, with a note to indicate it was taken by 'the waitress'.
(2) A photograph on the front of page 2 shows two women in the foreground, one wearing an academic gown, walking through the cloisters of St John's College. The printed caption reads: 'Two girls working for a future walk through the cloisters of St John's College, Cambridge. Both are reading Modern Languages at Girton'. The photograph is annotated in pencil to indicate that the left hand figure is Dorothy Mulcahy [Mary Dorothy Mulcahy, later Mrs Heapy, Girton 1955].
(3) A photograph on the reverse of page 2 shows two unidentified women working in Girton College Library with the printed caption: 'A place to work in'.
