Scope and Contents

This volume begins ‘Now I have attained the great age of 21 - - I ought - - to begin keeping a diary again. I dropped it about a year ago - - - ;

29 January: the Farcical Club performs ‘ ‘Creatures of Impulse’ in Maura’s room’;

15 February at the Verralls: ‘After dinner I tried my best to talk to the great Miss Fawcett (Newnham’s mathematical star) & failed ignominiously’;

19 February: ‘Miss Carthew continued my portrait’ [this is presumably the charcoal sketch of GW by Alice Carthew which is held by Girton College and catalogued at GCRF 5/1/12];

7 March: a College debate on ‘Strikes’;

8 March: ‘I had an hour’s row with Miss Welsh - - for having seconded some of the motions sent in on Tuesday evening. She was most severe & once quite insulting’;

18 April: ‘Miss Welsh was most friendly, in quite an apologetic way’;

1 May: ‘Miss Fawcett came to call on me (rather less shy than usual)’;

23 May: College debate - ‘I proposed ‘That the sage was mistaken when he said ‘It is not good to eat much honey’ ie pleasure’;

7 June: I was at the Senate House at 8.45am to hear the Mathematical Lists read. When E [?] P Fawcett was announced to be ‘above the Senior Wrangler’ the - - - scene was unequalled. I wouldn’t have missed it for worlds’;

11 June: ‘A perfectly blissful day - never to be forgotten’ (a trip to Ely with Mr Buckler and others);
