Personal diaries, 1889 - 1891
Scope and Contents
Photocopies of Georgina Buckler's diaries covering parts of her second and third years at Girton College.
The two volumes of Georgina Walrond’s diaries relating to her Girton years include a daily record of her Classical studies, with references to those who taught her (including Mr Edwards, Mr Graves, Mr Cooke, Mr Adam, Dr Postgate, Mr Duff, and Mr Gill), and a daily record of the number of hours worked.
She arrived in Cambridge with introductions to a number of Cambridge families: regular social calls to the following families are recorded - von Hugel, Jebb, Neville, Clark, Verrall, Goodhart, Creighton, Darwin, Glazebrook, Stanford, Graves, Myers, Ryles, Pertz, Conyngham, and Lyttelton. GW was a member of various Girton clubs and societies and regular mention is made of the Classical Club, the Farcical Club, and the Fire Brigade. She became Head Captain of the Fire Brigade in April 1890. She also played tennis regularly and played for Girton against Newnham in October 1890. She attended many College debates, at which she regularly spoke.
She attended church regularly on Sundays, visiting various churches and chapels, including Girton College chapel and the village church, St Giles, Holy Sepulchre, St Luke’s Chesterton, and the chapels of King’s College and Trinity College. She occasionally taught in Sunday Schools and she also undertook some work at a Night School in Cambridge, though this is not recorded in great detail.
Miss Welsh [Elizabeth Welsh, Mistress 1885-1903] is mentioned regularly in both volumes. A number of Girton acquaintances are mentioned, usually by first name only, including Maud [possibly Anne Maud Fletcher, G 1888 or Frances Maud Mary Ormiston, G 1988]; Maura [possibly Florence Maura Evans Williams, from Rhayader, later Mrs Latham, G 1888]; Dora [possibly Beatrice Theodora Mills, G 1889, Classics]; and Lily Bright [Mary Lilian Bright, G 1889]. Miss [Philippa] Fawcett of Newnham College [Mathematics, classed above the Senior Wrangler in Part I of the Tripos in 1890] appears to have been an acquaintance and is mentioned many times. There is also frequent reference to Teddy [Edward Grenfell], who was a cousin of Georgina's [Edward Grenfell became, in 1904, a partner in the banking firm J P Morgan & Co, which became Morgan Grenfell and Co in 1909].
Much diary space is devoted to Mr [William Hepburn] Buckler [Trinity College 1887] whom Georgina Walrond eventually married in May 1892. He is first mentioned in the diaries in December 1889 and appears to be variously referred to as H. B., the C. H. and The Bean.
Girton vacations were spent either at home in Lancaster Gate in London or visiting friends and family elsewhere. With the exception of a certain amount of reading and Girton work, they appear to have been spent largely in a succession of social calls, tennis, balls, dinners, visiting friends and family, churchgoing, at homes, theatre, and shopping. There is occasional mention of social work such as hospital visits and a visit to the Women’s University Settlement in Southwark in June 1890.
