Diary, 1953 - 1957
Scope and Contents
Red notebook, flyleaf inscribed ‘Margaret C Anderson August 7th 1953’. The volume is largely blank but contains detailed if sporadic blocks of diary entries over the period from 1953 to 1957. The early pages of the volume are numbered 181-205.
The first block (7 August to 6 September 1953) begins: ‘Hurrah, started on a new book! - - - my diary seems to be fairly well established now’. These pages are written while on holiday in France with ‘Grandpa’ [? her maternal grandfather, J C Willis] and ‘Frank’ [Anderson, Nan’s father] and in Scotland with Frank (visiting ‘Jean’).
The second block (26 April to 7 May 1955) begins: ‘So I take this up again, changed and yet not changed’. These pages are written mostly at Malvern Girls’ College, where Nan is elected ‘head of M.VI’.
The third block (11 to 28 January 1957) begins ‘Any comment about starting again would be fatuous’. It is written in Cambridge and London.
The volume contains loose ms notes on birds and plants, 20 April 1953, and a letter to ‘My dear Nan’ from Marjorie Sweeting, St Hugh’s College, Oxford, 12 April [1953?], concerning a proposed visit by Nan to St Hugh’s.
