Scope and Contents

File contains the following:
1) Brief biography of Cicely Ford, compiled by her great niece Jane Robson, née Macdonald, 2014?
2) Photocopy of Girton College Register entry for Cicely Ford, 1948;
3) Photocopies of two letters from Cicely Ford to her great niece Jane Macdonald, as follows:
26 March 1954 - she is thrilled at the news that Jane has a place at Girton and reflects on her own time there sixty years earlier and the likely changes since then; she feels it was easier to get in then; she first stayed at Girton aged eight and a half; she would like Jane to have the cups and saucers she used then; she offers some small pieces of advice;
2 October 1954 - she writes to greet Jane on her arrival at Girton; reflects on her own arrival in 1894, shopping beforehand for furniture for her room, arriving by carriage with a Miss [Annie] Whitelaw; talks of her ‘clinging farewell’ with her mother, having never been to school or ‘slept away from my family alone’, tears behind the Portress’ Lodge and being ‘unearthed ‘ there by Miss Daniel, a ‘Classical Don’, being ‘scared at the annual influx’ from various schools including North London Collegiate and St Leonards, but ultimately being homesick for only a week; mentions fees of £105 per year; describes her curtained room, dividing the sleeping area from the sitting area and wonders if Jane will have a similar room; hopes she is ‘feeling all the proper confidence and pride in NOT being born in the absurd ages of 60 years ago’.

Biographical / Historical

Cicely Ford was born at Highgate, London, the daughter of Arthur Ranken Ford, solicitor and Laura Kensington. She was part of an extended family committed to educating their daughters: she was the elder sister of Honoria Ford (Girton 1900, later Lady Hetherington) and a niece of Adela Kensington (Girton 1885, later Mrs Adam, mother of Barbara Wootton, Girton 1915). Cicely studied Natural Sciences at Girton from 1894-97. She later trained in social work; became a London County Council District Organiser; and was involved in children’s care work between 1911 and 1922. She was ordained a deaconess in the Church of England in 1922 and undertook work in the Diocese of Guildford. She died in a road accident in Ireland in 1960.
