Victoria Magazine and the English Woman's Journal, 1863 - 1864

 Sub-Fonds
Reference Code: GBR/0271/GCPP Davies 3

Scope and Contents

The Victoria Magazine was started by Emily Faithfull with Mr Gunning as a partner. It was not a financial success. The Family Chronicle contains reference to a note of 10 February 1863 from Miss Faithfull followed by correspondence and an interview. This led to an agreement between EF as publisher and Emily Davies as editor and signed by both, dated 15 March 1863 (Family Chronicle 288 a-b). The bulk of GCPP Davies 3 would originally have formed part of the magazine editor's archive, though 3/6 (ED to Anna Richardson) would have been returned to ED after the death of Anna Richardson. The notes by Lady Stephen on the contents of the magazine under ED's editorship (GCPP Davies 3/8-9) are included for convenience. They were found with the other Victoria Magazine papers in a bundle. The papers consist mainly of letters from authors about the publication of their articles. Note on the English Woman's Journal: the journal was founded in 1858. On 18 July 1862 ED met Isa Craig and Bessie Parkes and agreed to take on the editorship for September and October. She continued as editor for about 6 months. No EWJ papers have so far been noted in the ED archive other than the Chronicle 201, 262-263, 263a. ED's letters to Madame Bodichon (GCPP Bodichon 2/2-13) contain references to her editorship.
